However, the dynamics changed when the Spanish arrived in the 18th century and built the Santa Barbara Mission and the Presidio. Many enjoy visiting Montecito’s Butterfly Beach as well as the various hiking trails the city has to offer. Its most popular hiking destination, San Ysidro Falls, is a beautiful trail that is moderately easy and well worth the climb. The trail leads to a waterfall that is just 2 miles from the trailhead. The waterfall has been known to be very impressive just after a strong rain, and more tranquil during the drier months. If you are looking for a more strenuous hike, you can continue on the San Ysisdro trail up to its summit, East Camino Cielo Rd. It is a 9-mile round trip and an excellent work out. With its great selection of outdoor activities, fine dining, and historic sites, Montecito is great for almost anyone.
