Meet Rec Cen Goer of the Month, Natasha Grant
Natasha Grant is a 3rd year Sociology Major at UCSB. Even though she is an employee at UCSB’s Recreation Center, she spends an extra couple hours there five days a week just to get her work out on. Here she reveals all about her workouts, the importance of fitness in her life, and tips on how to beat the freshmen 15.
Why do you like to work out at the Rec Cen?
It’s a fun environment, good music and upbeat, and I like how the cardio machines are separated from the free weight area. They have a lot of equipment too.
What do you do there?
I usually do the Stairmaster or Elliptical. I try to do 45 to 50 minutes on either one every other day. The days I don’t do cardio, I work on arms, leg, and ab workouts. For legs, I mostly do squats with the bar and lunges. But then there’s also the leg extension machines for the back extension. For abs mostly the ball and the mat.
What is a GREAT workout for you?
On days when I know I can’t work out the next day, I usually try to do 35 to 40 minutes of cardio and then a leg workout which includes lunges, squats, leg extensions and then I try to do some sit-ups with the ball and then sit-ups flat on the floor.
What’s your favorite music to listen to while at the Rec Cen?
Probably hip hop. It’s a gym mix. Some Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, and David Banner.
Why do you think health and fitness is important?
It’s important to stay healthy. Especially with a college lifestyle where you probably don’t eat as well as you should. With all the going out at night and drinking, it’s good to have something to keep you healthy and in shape.
Have you always been into fitness?
My family is super into fitness, pretty much everyone in my family is an athlete. So it was important for me to keep up with them. I played a lot of sports in high school so it was always important for me.
What is your favorite time to work out at the Rec Cen?
In the mornings actually. I’m a morning person so I like to get it over with and out of the way and then just go on with my day.
Have you ever been hit on at the Rec Cen?
Haha. While I was at work, but never when I was actually working out.
Do you find yourself trying to keep up with competition at UCSB to be fit and have a look good?
Yeah actually I do. Especially in college because its that time when girls start to not be able to control their fluctuating weights. Especially when you’re on the beach, and there are so many fit people around. You at least want to be somewhere in the middle.

Try and go to the gym 5 days a week. Try to watch what you eat at the dining commons and not put everything on your plate. It’s good to grab one main thing and stick with that for every meal instead of grabbing a little bit of everything.
